The Hillside aluminium smelter is located in Richards Bay, 200 kilometres north of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa. The operation is fully owned and operated by BHP Billiton. Richards Bay has one of South Africa's major deepwater ports. Construction of Hillside Aluminium began in 1993. Hillside's two potlines cast their first metal in June 1995.
In February 2003, Hillside was expanded with a further half potline. First metal was poured from this half potline during October 2003. This increased production at Hillside from 535 000 to more than 700 000 tons per annum, making it the largest aluminium smelter in the southern hemisphere and South Africa's major producer of primary aluminium. It is one of the world's most advanced and efficient AP30 smelters and produces T-bars and primary aluminium ingots.

If you are one of those gifted individuals who would rather contribute a trade, gift or talent , we have lots of opportunities for you to do so. Here are a list of the potential services and skills we are in need of.
*Gardening/ Garden Services: Garden maintenance, lawn, vegetable garden, weeding
*Electrical Maintenance and Service. We are wanting to extend our facilities and need assistance here
*Plumbing: Maintenance and Service
*Data Capturer/Administation: Can you help us in the office? Time is scarce. We need help putting together mailings, making photocopies, duplicating literature, entering data into a computer, and completing other office tasks.
*Bathing and Feeding the babies - this is a favourite especially amongst the ladies!
*Catering - we need volunteers to assist with cooking and preparing meals for the babies and fellow volunteers.
*Fund Raising Coordinator - Seeking support to care for new orphans in, we need to spread the word about the work there. Could you help us develop events that connect people to the needs in iKhaya LikaBaba and opportunities to meet them? Events might include student car washes, a walk-a-thons, and dinners.
*Ambassador - Are you excited about what iKhaya LikaBaba is doing? Be an Ambassador for orphans, representing the ministry of iKhaya LikaBaba in your church, to your company, or to your friends and family. Help find support for orphans around the world!
*Grant Writing Research - iKhaya LikaBaba would like to take advantage of the many foundations and organizations that may be interested in funding the expansion of our ministry to orphans. To do this, we must gather information on the possibilities available and the requirements of each. We look for assistance from someone who can help us prepare proposals by researching the programs of appropriate foundations and companies.

*International Volunteers:
Being a volunteer at Ikhaya LikaBaba offers you a rare opportunity to be of genuine service to these orphans, while immersing yourself in a complex and colorful culture.
Your volunteer opportunities at this clean, quality facility are varied. First, one of the most important contributions you can make is to provide child care for the youngest residents: the infants and toddlers who need caring hearts and steady arms to hold and feed them, help them with their first steps, and play the games that allow their socialization and language skills to progress.
The staff at the babies' home are very appreciative of the extra help our volunteers can offer them. Volunteers are free to tutor the children, organize arts and crafts or sports activities, and help out with basic chores such as feeding the kids, and folding laundry. This is a meaningful way to learn first hand the hardship most children in the world face, and give back to the underprivileged children growing up in a Third World country.
Volunteers don't necessarily need care giving experience. All we ask is that you come with energy, enthusiasm, an open mind and an open heart. With little staff to organize recreational activities for the children, we ask the volunteers to organize activities such as sports, educational exercises, or arts and crafts. With little resources at the orphanages, it helps if the volunteer can bring educational resources, art supplies, or tapes with children's songs.
Volunteering at iKhaya LikaBaba Offers:
* An unforgettable experience helping and improving South African communities
* An opportunity to broaden your perspective and worldview
* An opportunity to participate in and learn local cultural activities (e.g.: language, crafts, dancing)
* Memorable travel experiences with the chance to see exotic sites you have always dreamed about
* The ability to make lifelong friends from around the globe
* A valuable work experience that strengthens your resume, exhibiting your diligence, independence, and intercultural experiences
* A great way to develop and support your self-confidence and interpersonal skills
Volunteers will be hosted at the volunteer house/ host families depending on numbers and availability. You are welcome to rent your own bachelor apartment and would need to let us know in advance so that we can make the necessary arrangements for you.
We have had wonderful volunteers through our transition home, you can find out more about their experiences here.

Why Adoption?
Consider the need:
- It is estimated there are between 143 million and 210 million orphans worldwide (recent UNICEF report.)
- The current population of the United States is just a little over 300 million… to give you an idea of the enormity of the numbers… (The current population of Russia is 141 million)
- Every day 5,760 more children become orphans
- 2,102,400 more children become orphans every year in Africa alone
- Every 15 seconds, another child in Africa becomes an AIDS orphan
- There are an estimated 14 million AIDS orphans in Sub-Saharan Africa (a number higher than the total of every under-eighteen year old in Canada, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Ireland combined)
- This figure is estimated to reach 18 million orphans in Africa alone by 2010 (only two and a half years away)
- 8 out of 10 children orphaned by AIDS lives in sub-saharan Africa
- Approximately 250,000 children are adopted annually, but…
- Each year 14,505,000 children grow up as orphans and age out of the system by age sixteen
- Each day 38,493 orphans age out
- Every 2.2 seconds another orphan ages out with no family to belong to and no place to call home
- In Russia and the Ukraine, studies have shown that 10% - 15% of these children commit suicide before they reach age eighteen
- These studies also show that 60% of the girls become prostitutes and 70% of the boys become hardened criminals
- Another Russian study reported that of the 15,000 orphans aging out of state-run institutions every year, 10% committed suicide, 5,000 were unemployed, 6,000 were homeless and 3,000 were in prison within three years…

In light of need, answering the question, “why adoption?”, quickly turns upon itself to ask a perhaps better question: “Why NOT adoption?”
